French Huguenot and skilled florilegium painter Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533–1588) accompanied Rene de Laudonniere’s expedition to Florida in 1564, becoming the first European artist to visit North America.
During his year-long stay at French Fort Caroline, Le Moyne created countless depictions of neighboring Native American tribes, as well as flora, fauna, and Floridian geography. Though most of his work was destroyed in a Spanish raid on the fort the same year, Le Moyne recreated several pieces from memory.
His drawing of the North American coastline, published posthumously as Floridae Americae Provinciae by Flemish engraver Theodor de Bry, greatly influenced other cartographic works of the time.

Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, the first European artist to visit the New World, created a number of sketches and maps during his year-long stay at Fort Caroline in Florida between 1564 and 1565. After a series of Spanish raids ruined his work and disbanded the French colony, Le Moyne returned to Europe, where he continued painting naturalistic florilegia. At the request of King Charles IX, Le Moyne redrew many of his American pieces from memory, though he did not publish them. Upon Le Moyne's death in 1588, his widow sold the American paintings to Flemish engraver Theodor de Bry, who produced the copperplate engraving Americae Floridae Provinciae for his book America pt II in 1591.

Americae pars, Nunc Virginia dicta
Americae pars, Nunc Virginia dicta began as a sketch when British mathematician Thomas Harriot and Elizabethan artist John White explored newly chartered Virginia by longboat c. 1585. White created a loose graphite sketch of the coastline as well as a painted watercolor edition complete with names of local Native American tribes. Fearing a leak of information to rival Spaniards, White's cartography was never published in England; instead, Flemish engraver Theodor de Bry recreated White's map for his book America (1590) in Frankfurt, Germany. Titled Americae pars, Nunc Virginia dicta, de Bry's copperplate engraving was widely circulated throughout Europe as pro-colonization propaganda. Later hailed as one of the best maps of the sixteenth century, Americae pars, Nunc Virginia dicta influenced later cartographers such as John Smith.

John White, an English artist and later colonial governor, incorporated Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues' cartography into his own work.
During his five voyages to North America between 1585 and 1590, White surveyed much of coastal Virginia and present-day North Carolina. His return to Europe led him to publish several of his works, including a map of Virginia that included coastlines from Le Moyne's original drawings.
Theodor de Bry adapted White’s watercolor maps in 1590, engraving Americae pars, Nunc Virginia dicta as a plate within his book, America. Volume II of America, published a year later, featured several of Le Moyne's views of Florida, including Floridae Americae Provinciae.
